If the water from your Lucky-Goldstar fridge isn't tasting right, it's probably time for a new filter. LG, known by their global slogan "Life's Good," is the South Korean company that grew from humble Lak Hui (pronounced "Lucky") beginnings in cosmetics and plastics to domestic electronics to a worldwide powerhouse. When it comes to refrigerators, LG is known for a wide range of high-quality products for virtually every budget. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 new refrigerators sold in the United States today have the LG logo on them. It's no wonder the question of how to replace LG refrigerator water filters is showing up in online forums and search. Luckily, we have the answer.
Before you start, identify your filter model. It's going to be on the filter itself or listed in your owner's manual. The model number is specific to your fridge or a set of LG refrigerators and should tell us where it is located. The design of refrigerator models can change year to year, so your own experience may vary slightly. But in most modern refrigerators, learning how to change a filter on an LG fridge is easy: remove the old filter, remove the protective cap from the O-rings on the new filter, install, and flush. Those steps are almost universal. The mechanism varies by filter:
LT500P (older side-by-side and bottom-freezer models): Located in the upper interior corner of the fresh food compartment. Press the release tab to open the housing cover. Push the old filter straight down to release and remove. Insert the new filter straight up into the housing until it seats, and close the cover.
LT600P (French door and side-by-side): Located at the top interior of the fresh food compartment. Press the tab to open the housing cover, then press the release button to eject the old filter. Align the new filter's tabs with the slots, push in firmly until it clicks, and close the cover.
LT700P (wide range of side-by-side and French door bottom-freezer models): Located at the top interior of the fresh food compartment, likely behind a hinged cover. Open the cover, pull the filter downward until it stops, then pull it straight out. Align the new filter's tabs, push it in until it stops, push it up into the housing, and close the cover. Gentle pressure may be needed.
LT800P (side-by-side interior or French door left-door bin, depending on model): On side-by-side models, located at the top interior and replaced using the same hinged pull-down method as the LT700P. On French door models, the filter sits in the left-door bin: lift and remove the bottom door bin, swing the filter bottom out of the housing, twist counterclockwise to release, and pull out. Install the new filter by pushing in and rotating clockwise, then swing back into the housing and reinstall the door bin.
LT1000P (current premium French door models): Located at the top interior of the fresh food compartment, or look in the left-door bin on select models. For the interior version: if the top shelf is in the highest position, lower or remove it first. Pull the filter straight downward, then rotate counterclockwise a quarter turn to release. Rotate fully before pulling to avoid getting your filter stuck. Insert the new filter with tabs horizontal, push up, rotating clockwise a quarter turn to lock.
After any installation: flush 2 to 3 gallons through the water dispenser before drinking. This water can be used to hydrate your house plants. This clears carbon fines and air from the lines. Discard the first batch of ice as well. While not harmful, you may see black specks of activated carbon that will look unappealing in your ice tea or cocktail.
How to Reset the LG Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light
After replacing the filter, press and hold the Water Filter or Filter Reset button on the dispenser panel for three seconds. You'll hear a first beep when you press; hold until a second beep confirms the reset. If the light stays on, verify the filter is fully seated and locked before trying again. Resetting the fridge filter light is often intuitive on modern touch displays so shouldn't require a deep dive into internet forums to resolve. Don't see a button? Check your LG mobile app under appliance settings. (And welcome to the Internet of Things!)
The most obvious signal that you need to change your LG fridge water filter is the indicator light itself. LG refrigerators display a yellow or red light when the filter is approaching or has reached the end of its service life. LG ThinQ model owners will get an app notification. Don't dismiss it!
A few other signs point to the same conclusion without waiting for a light.
Reduced water flow from the dispenser is usually the first noticeable change, followed by a gradual decline in water and ice taste such as a chlorine or slightly metallic quality that wasn't there before. Slow ice production, cloudy ice cubes, or ice that absorbs odors from the freezer can all point to a saturated filter media that's no longer performing effectively. If your water smells faintly of chlorine or has a bitter edge, don't wait for the indicator to confirm what you're already tasting.
LG recommends replacing every 200–500 gallons depending on the model or six months, whichever comes first. Households with higher water usage, undertreated well water, or municipal water with elevated chlorine may need to take these steps to change the filter on their LG fridge on the shorter end of that window.
LG uses three main filter locations across its refrigerator lines, and knowing your series makes finding it straightforward.
Interior ceiling of the fresh food compartment
The most common location, used across LG's French door and side-by-side lineup. The filter sits in a housing at the top of the refrigerator section, typically on the left side, behind a hinged or push-open cover. Many LT600P, LT700P, LT800P (side-by-side models), and LT1000P are found here. A top shelf placed in the highest position may need to be dropped down to access the filter.
Upper interior corner (vertical cartridge)
Older LG side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators use the LT500P in a vertical housing in the upper-left or upper-right corner of the fresh food compartment. The filter pushes straight up into the housing rather than twisting into a ceiling mount.
Left-door bin (select French door models)
LT800P and LT1000P filters in certain LG French door refrigerators are located inside the left refrigerator door, accessible by removing the bottom door bin. This placement keeps the filter out of the interior ceiling space, which is used for the InstaView glass panel on premium models.
If you're not certain which filter your refrigerator takes, check the model number label on the side wall or ceiling inside the fresh food compartment and then cross-reference it against the filter compatibility table on the LG Refrigerator Water Filters page at All Filters. Still not sure? Have your filter part number or fridge model handy and give the All Filters customer service team a call.

While you're replacing the water filter, it's worth noting that LG recommends changing the LT120F Fresh Air Filter on the same six-month schedule. It handles odor control inside the fresh food compartment and is easy to overlook until your refrigerator stops smelling as fresh as it should.
