Key Takeaways:
  • Most Frigidaire refrigerators house the water filter in one of two locations: inside the refrigerator compartment (upper right) or behind the base grille at the bottom front.
  • No tools are needed, replacement takes about five minutes, and can be completed without shutting off the water on most models
  • Flush at least two gallons through the dispenser after installation to clear air and carbon fines
  • Replace every six months or when the filter indicator light activates
The thing about renting an apartment for the first time or new home ownership is that these things don't come with a user manual. Sure, there are pages of lease agreements for the rental or stacks of documents to close on a mortgage, but they don't include much in the "how to" space. That's where Life Hacker and @dadadvicefrombo often step in to fill the gaps. For home air and water filtration, you've come to right expert. Some tasks like changing water filters for a Frigidaire refrigerator are easy enough, but here are a few tips for getting right the first time—most people forget a critical part of step five.

Where Is the Water Filter on a Frigidaire Refrigerator?

Before you replace it, you need to find it. Frigidaire and Kenmore use three filter configurations depending on the model. Frigidaire filter models such as the PureSource EPTWFU01, ULTRAWF, WF2CB Gallery, WF3CB, and FPPWFU02 PurePour PWF-2 may be found in one of the configurations, often based on the age of the fridge:

Interior Upper-Right: this is the most common location on current Frigidaire models, including many French door and side-by-side refrigerators. The filter compartment sits in the upper right corner of the refrigerator interior or mounted to the ceiling, sometimes behind a hinged cover. Look for a push-eject, slide-out mechanism, or a push-button release. If none is available, try a firm quarter turn or so counter-clockwise to release. Sometimes a little pressure is needed to release the old filter.

Base Grille: some Frigidaire side-by-side and top-freezer models, including previous generation models, position the filter behind the decorative grille panel at the bottom front of the unit. The filter is released by pressing an eject button. A decorative cap from the old filter transfers to the new one to maintain the grille appearance and keep your fridge Instagram ready.

Rear Interior: older Frigidaire models locate it in the rear of the refrigerator compartment, in the top right corner, inside a plastic housing. The filter is secured with a twist-on cup cover rather than a push mechanism. If you have a refrigerator that's more than 10–15 years old, this might be your configuration. Check your owner's manual if you're unsure. Though we said homes don't come with owners manuals, appliances usually do. If yours is lost or the previous homeowner failed to file it in a conveniently labeled drawer when they sold the house, search your fridge model number (usually on the interior side wall or behind the crisper drawer) online or give the team at All Filters a call with that number handy.

Not sure which you have? Check the part number printed on your existing filter or use your model number and search at allfilters.com/refrigeratorfilters/frigidaire or in the search bar anywhere on AllFilters.com. You'll find genuine OEM Frigidaire as well as compatible models by SpiroPure for Frigidaire, Kenmore, and Electrolux brands.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Replace a Frigidaire Water Filter

Step 1: Turn Off the Ice Maker (Optional)

You don't need to shut off the water supply for most Frigidaire filter replacements, but turning off the ice maker prevents it from cycling mid-replacement. Locate the ice maker switch (usually on the ice maker arm or a toggle inside the freezer) and flip it off before proceeding.

Step 2: Locate and Access the Filter Compartment

Based on your model (see above), open the filter cover door for interior models, or kneel down and locate the grille release for base-mounted filters. For the rear-tube style, open the refrigerator and look for the filter housing in the back upper right corner.

Step 3: Remove the Old Filter

Interior push models: Press the eject button or pull the tab to release the filter, then slide it straight out. Base grille models: Press the eject button and the filter will pop forward. Pull it out of the housing. Rear tube models: Twist the cup cover counterclockwise to remove it, then pull the filter straight out of the housing.

Step 4: Install the New Filter

Remove any protective caps from the new filter. For interior models, align the filter with the arrow or indicator mark pointing up, then slide it into the housing until it clicks or locks. For base grille models, align the arrow pointing left (toward the outside of the fridge), push the filter into the housing until it clicks, then reinstall the decorative cap from the old filter. For rear tube models, insert the filter nozzle-up into the housing and reinstall the cup cover by twisting clockwise until secure.

Step 5: Flush the System and Reset the Indicator

Turn the ice maker back on. Run approximately two gallons of water through the dispenser to purge trapped air and remove any carbon fines from the new filter. It is normal to see slightly cloudy or discolored water for the first few glasses. You may also soak your filter in water for 15–30 minutes to saturate and prime the filter media. We get a lot of calls about initially slow flow or cloudy water, and soaking and flushing should take care of it. To reset the filter indicator light, press and hold the "Filter Reset" or "Change Filter" button on the control panel for 3–5 seconds until the light changes.

When Should You Replace Your Frigidaire Water Filter?

Frigidaire recommends replacing your water filter every six months or approximately every 200–300 gallons of use, whichever comes first. Most current models track this automatically and will illuminate a filter status light when replacement is due. Don't wait for the light to go red if you've noticed changes in water taste, reduced dispenser flow, or cloudy ice as these are signs the filter is past its useful capacity.

FAQs on How to Replace a Frigidaire Water Filter

How do I change the water filter on a Frigidaire refrigerator?

Locate your filter (interior upper right, base grille, or rear tube depending on model), press the eject button, twist the cup cover or filter itself to release the old filter, insert the new filter until it clicks or locks, then flush two gallons through the dispenser and reset the indicator light.
Your refrigerator's filter indicator light will signal when it's close to time and/or when it's time to replace a filter. Do not ignore this light. You can also watch for reduced water flow from the dispenser, off-tasting water, or ice that looks cloudy or tastes unusual. Replace every six months or so regardless of visible signs.
The most common cause is using the wrong filter model for your refrigerator. Frigidaire uses several different filter formats (ULTRAWF, WF3CB, WF2CB, and WFCB) that are not interchangeable. Confirm your model number and confirm you have the correct Frigidaire or SpiroPure model. Also check that alignment arrows are oriented correctly before pushing the filter in. Moderate pressure may be needed but do not force. Still having trouble? Give All Filters customer service a call or send a chat, available seven days a week.
Frigidaire water filters are rated for six months or approximately 200–300 gallons of use. Households with heavy water usage, well water, high sediment content or chlorine levels that aren't pre-filtered before reaching the fridge may reach that limit sooner. Watch for changes in water quality and follow the six-month schedule at a minimum.
An expired filter loses its ability to adsorb chlorine, sediment, and other contaminants, and the water passing through it may taste or smell worse than unfiltered tap water. A severely clogged filter also restricts flow, reducing dispenser output and forcing the ice maker to work harder. In extreme cases, a saturated filter can release trapped contaminants back into the water supply or enable bacteria or mold to build up.
